National Customs Agent of Mexico arrested by U.S. authorities in organized crime investigation

Matamoros, Tamaulipas — An employee of the National Customs Agency of Mexico is under investigation for organized crime. On Thursday, Carlos Eugenio Benítez, a customs official, was arrested by U.S. authorities.

The official was wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged organized crime, both agencies said in a statement Friday.

In a joint statement, they reported that Benítez Orta was arrested by U.S. authorities and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Agency of the FGR at the Brownsville-Matamoros International Bridge.

He was arrested in the U.S. on an outstanding warrant.

Authorities indicated that he is currently being looked into as part of the ongoing investigation into organized crime without providing specific details.

Mexico’s National Customs Agency stated that it is cooperating with authorities in accordance with the current legal framework.

Since his capture, he was transferred to the Federal Social Rehabilitation Center (Cefereso) No. 1 “Altiplano” in the State of Mexico.
