Municipality one step closer to official name change

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — State Congress has approved the municipal name change request from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen. The joint committees of Constitutional Affairs and Municipal Affairs of the State Congress approved the decree initiative to change the name of the municipality.

The request approval of State Congress is a key step within the legislative process.

The proposal, presented by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, was published in the Parliamentary Gazette on March 7 after being approved by a majority in an extraordinary city hall session on February 28.

The Solidaridad City Council justified the name change saying that Playa del Carmen is a name with greater global recognition, associated with its tourist appeal, nightlife, and proximity to archaeological sites such as Tulum and Cobá.

According to the explanatory statement, this modification would strengthen the municipality’s presence in the international tourism sector.

During the Thursday congress session, members of the Constitutional Affairs Committee, headed by Representative Jorge Arturo Sanén Cervantes, voted in favor of preparing the opinions. Likewise, the Municipal Affairs Committee, chaired by Representative Eric Arcila Arjona, approved the initiative.

Representative Eric Arcila Arjona, acting as secretary, reported that the ruling was unanimously approved and ordered its referral to the President of the Board of Directors for further legislative process.

Municipality one step closer to official name change

If Congress approves the decree and the municipalities approve it, the municipality of Solidaridad will officially be renamed Playa del Carmen. If this change materializes, it would represent a historic change in the administrative identity of this tourist area in Quintana Roo.
