Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The director of Zofemat says that the municipality has a goal to provide 37 public beach access points around Solidaridad. Marco Antonio Loeza Pacheco, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) says currently, there are only 26.
“We have 26 access point agreements, authorized with their resolution, but in total, the municipality intends to have 37 agreements.
“We have 11 pending procedures that are with Semarnat in Mexico City that are already in the process of resolution. Fortunately we have had a very close collaboration with Semarnat so in that sense, in one or two months, we will have positive results,” he added.
One of the most notable areas with beach access issues is in the southern portion of the municipality around Puerto Aventuras, where for years, people have been denied access to public beach areas due to hotel and / or business restrictions.
Loeza Pacheco said that access to the beaches will have to be guaranteed to people after certain reforms to federal regulations, which were announced earlier this week.
