More than 35 tons of PET plastics recycled on Isla Holbox in three months

Holbox, Q.R. — Recycling company PetStar says they have recycled 35 tons of PET plastic from the island of Holbox in three months. The company, which was launched on the island in 2024, says approximately three tons is sent from the island each week to Merida.

Ulises Martínez, the Municipal Director of Environmental Sanitation, said that during a recent meeting with PetStar, they reported 35 tons collected already this year. According to Martinez, in January five tons of PET was recycled, in February, 10 tons and in March, 20 tons of PET plastics were recycled.

He said the plastic is pressed into bales. Once at least 16 bales are collected, they are then shipped off to Merida, Yucatan and from there, to the main PetStar recycle plant located in Toluca, outside Mexico City.

Martinez said that recycling allows for a cleaner island and fosters a culture of recycling. He also said that companies like PetStar not only help keep the island clean, but also help generate a little extra income for local families since they buy PET plastic by the kilo.
