Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal officials say more than 10,500 people regularly use the Playa del Carmen BiciPlaya bike service that has been established throughout the city.
Diego Grácidas Martínez of the Empresa Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano, says they have come a long way since the service began in September with only 70 users. Now, he says, more than 10,500 people use the bikes to get around the city.
“It has been progressing favorably. It has been increasing day-by-day in terms of the number of users which has placed us as one of the main four bicycle loan systems in the Mexican Republic,” he said.
He says the bike program is set up around the city including as distant as Plaza Las Américas, which is about five kilometers from the city center. He explained that in order to use the bikes, a user needs to sign up for a membership and choose an option of loan time. Prices start at 98 peso for a day or 420 peso for an annual pass. The bikes are available all 365 days of the year.
