Mexico requests U.S. extradition of mastermind behind journalist’s murder

Mexico City, Mexico — The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) has requested the U.S. extradition of a man wanted for the murder of a journalist. Over the weekend, the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) made the request to U.S. authorities after obtaining an arrest warrant in 2020 for Dámaso “L”.

According to the FGR, Dámaso “L” is wanted in Mexico “for his alleged mastermind of the murder of journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas.” The FGE also has an Interpol red notice for Dámaso “L”.

Mexican authorities were told by the U.S. Department of Justice that Dámaso “L” is currently being prosecuted in the United States for various other crimes.

However, the FGR has pointed out that three people were involved in the murder of the journalist. To date, two have already been convicted and sentenced. In February 2020, Heriberto “P” was sentenced to 14 years for his involvement in the murder of Javier Valdez Cárdenas. In June 2021, Juan “P” was sentenced 32 years in Mexican prison.

Mexican authorities are requesting the extradition of Dámaso “L” so that he too, can be tried for the murder of Valdez Cárdenas.
