Holbox, Q.R. — More than two dozen passengers found themselves temporarily stranded on the Holbox-Chiquilá ferry run. A stalled vessel was reported by passengers in the middle of the run Tuesday morning.
The mechanical failure forced the evacuation of the passengers on board the 9 Hermanos ferry, who were forwarded by motorboat. According to 9 Hermanos Supervisor Gabriel Betancourt, a detached hose from the engine affected the vessel’s propulsion, leaving the vessel stranded.
In response, ferry crew members activated safety protocols and requested external support to protect passengers while repairs were carried out at sea, Betancourt explained.
Some passengers uploaded the incident to social media while waiting for the motorboat evacuation.

In response, Betancourt clarified that although the incident appeared dramatic, it was a controlled technical malfunction that was addressed according to the company’s established procedures.
He said after notifying the Port Authority, they opted to evacuate the passengers using speedboats due to the heavy swell and to avoid risking potential collisions with larger vessels.
Once the evacuation was complete, technical personnel carried out the repairs on site, and the vessel was returned to its base.
