Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio says she will propose a municipal name change to City Council then State Congress. If approved, she will open a public consult into a name change. On Thursday, the new mayor says a name change from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen is being considered.
“At an international level we are known as Playa del Carmen which is a community of founding families, and many who come from all over Mexico to stake their lives and their future here feel much more represented by Playa del Carmen,” she said.
Mercado says the government of Solidaridad will submit a public consultation proposal to replace the name of Solidaridad with that of Playa del Carmen. Mercado says it is the name residents and tourists recognize as a destination.
According to Estefanía Mercado, the proposal will first be submitted to the City Council for consideration and then sent to the State Congress.
“It is a majority government where the voices of the majority are a priority and that is why this name change to Playa del Carmen will be put to a consultation,” she said.
