Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Mayor of Playa del Carmen says all beaches will be free for public access and privatization will not be allowed. Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefana Mercado made the comment Tuesday in response to rumors that a central beach club intends to privatize.

Mercado denied reports circulating in some media outlets about the alleged authorization to privatize Playa Mamitas. In an official statement, the Secretariat of Urban Development and Territorial Planning stated that “we will not allow the privatization of beaches at Playa Mamitas or any other inch of our coastline.”
The municipal government clarified that it has not issued any construction permits for development in that area and that any proposed project would be subject to environmental and planning assessments by other agencies.
In an official statement, Mayor Mercado said “the beaches belong to the people! In Playa Del Carmen, access to our beaches is guaranteed by law. There are no, nor will there be, permits to privatize them. Playa Mamitas and every corner of our coast will remain free and public.”
