Maya Train workers block highway over wage payment delays

Costa Maya, Q.R. — Frustrated Maya Train workers unblocked a section of highway Monday after protesting non-payment. The group of workers blocked both sides of the highway around a section of Tren Maya overpass after failing to be paid on time.

The large group of workers claimed ongoing non-payment of their wages, money that has either been paid late or not at all. At the blockade, they refused to open the highway until Sedena made the payment, which they said, was supped to be paid Friday.

However, on Monday, not only had they still not been paid, those responsible for making payment stopped answering their phones.

The group who blocked the Chetumal-Bacalar highway near Xul-Ha, lifted their protest after reaching agreements with representatives of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) for the payment of their overdue wages.

The blockade lasted nearly two hours, leaving motorists attempting to reach Chetumal and other southern regions, stuck in lengthy lines.
