Marina rescue exhausted snorkeler two miles off Costa Maya

Costa Maya, Q.R. — A man snorkeling off the coast of Xcalak was rescued by Marina personnel during a routine tour. Navy personnel came upon the man two nautical miles (3.7 kilometers) from the coast of Xcalak.

The man was snorkeling and exhibiting signs of extreme tiredness when he happened to see the Marina vessel. He was able to flag them down and request assistance back to shore.

In an official statement, the Mexican Navy reported “through the Ninth Naval Region and the Seventeenth Naval Zone, naval personnel provided support to a person approximately two nautical miles (3.7 kilometers) from the coast of Xcalak, Quintana Roo.

“This action was carried out during a maritime surveillance tour in the vicinity of Xcalak in which naval personnel sighted a person who was practicing snorkeling.

“Upon noticing the presence of the naval vessel, said person requested support through signs denoting tiredness. For the above, and in order to safeguard human life at sea, support was provided by providing water and transportation to the Xcalak dock.”
