Costa Maya, Q.R. — A man believed responsible for the murder of his girlfriend has been jailed in Chetumal. On Thursday, the FGE of Quintana Roo announced the arrest of Edgar G for femicide. He was taken into police custody after a Chetumal judge issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to the FGE, Edgar G was picked up after a police investigation found discrepancies between his story and their findings. The FGE said that on the night of September 19, Edgar G reported the disappearance of his girlfriend.
He told police that she had left at dawn the day before to visit another community but failed to return. Police issued an Amber Missing Person’s Alert for the young woman. “In parallel, derived from an investigation, it was learned that the information provided by the now accused did not coincide with the evidence obtained from the investigation,” the FGE reported.
The woman’s body was located in a well on a ranch outside the town of Rovirosa in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco near the border with Belize. She has been identified as Leticia N. The FGE said Edgar G tried to hide the body. An autopsy determined the woman died from suffocation by strangulation.
Edgar G was apprehended in the streets of Chetumal and will remain jailed during his trial.
