Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: A man being held in Playa del Carmen police custody has been found dead. The unidentified man was found deceased in his jail cell early Tuesday morning.
The man was reportadly arrested hours earlier for public disturbance. After being arrested, he was transferred to the Solidaridad Public Security Separations where he was found dead.
An on-duty doctor responding to the 3:00 a.m. emergency situation reported the man deceased by hanging.
According to local reports, he was found suspended inside his cell by a pair of shoelaces. He was taken down and CPR applied, but unresponsive to efforts. Paramedics were called for a hospital transfer, but they arrived to find he no longer had any vital signs.
Local media have reported the deceased man to be of Canadian nationality, however, local authorities have not commented publicly on the death.
UPDATE: Family of the victim have confirmed the deceased man was of Canadian nationality. On Wednesday, family of the now-deceased told Riviera Maya News that the man found dead in his cell was Canadian Thomas Glen “H”.
