Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Public Security of Solidaridad confirmed the discovery of a homemade vessel on Playa del Carmen shores. The makeshift boat was found at Playa El Secreto Monday.
Although the boat had been abandoned, those who made it left behind clothing, drums of fuel and a car engine.
Police chief Raúl Tassinari explained that they learned of the presence of the boat through a 911 call.
“It is a makeshift boat. It has no provenance, no registration number but it had some drums full of gasoline and some clothes. The Navy has already taken a look and the port captaincy seized it. Personnel from the National Migration Institute was also given a view,” explained the official.
The police chief added that inside the boat they found it was equipped with a Toyota car engine, but he did not elaborate.
Several makeshift vessels have been found abandoned along Isla Mujeres and Cancun shores in the past several months. This is the first known vessel to make landfall in Playa del Carmen.
