Mahahual receives Celebrity Edge, its first cruise ship in more than a year

Mahahual, Q.R. — Costa Maya has received its first cruise ship in more than a year. On Tuesday, Celebrity Edge ship docked at Mahahaual after setting sail from Fort Lauderdale. It is the first ship from the US to dock in Mexican waters since the start of the pandemic, and the first to include Costa Maya in 15 months.

On Tuesday, local health authorities were on site to greet the ship, which arrived at 7:20 a.m. Health declarations were reviewed before the ship’s 1,176 passengers disembarked for a day of shopping and sightseeing.

The ship, along with its 744 crew, left the Mahahual dock at 5:45 p.m. bound for Nassau, Bahamas. Health authorities noted that there were no health incidents recorded during the ship’s stay in port.

Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, head of state health stressed that with strict health measures, the state is moving forward with its reactivation plan.

Mahahual, Costa Maya vendors, are anticipating the arrival of another six ships during the month of July and 10 more during August.
