Longtime Playa del Carmen restaurant destroyed by fire

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Two large restaurant palapas in central Playa del Carmen were completely destroyed by fire Saturday. Firemen rushed to the scene of the blazing palapa rooftops around 11:00 a.m. only to find they were beyond saving.

Flames shot high into the air as the extremely dry grass burned away. Only a charred wooden skeleton remains of what was once Restaurante Nativo’s roof.

Motorists passing the burning palapas on the corner of Juárez Avenue and Playa del Carmen Boulevard were at a near standstill as they watched flames quickly spread from one palapa to another.

Restaurant staff and patrons inside at the time of the fire escaped without injury. Local authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire.
