Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Local artist Josse Arenarte has finished a sand masterpiece off a Playa del Carmen beach. The local sculptor completed his Christmas themed sand nativity scene late Wednesday night.
Arenarte, who started his life sized sand project December 16, called his work complete late Christmas night. His sand sculpture can be found at Playa Fundadores next to the Puerta Maya in central Playa del Carmen.
The Mexican artist sculpted life-size figures in sand that are traditionally part of a nativity scene. The image of angels, Joseph and Mary, the three wise men and shepherds next to the manger are part of the scene.
Many people have gathered at Fundadores beach to watch the sculpture turn a hard mound of sand into detailed art.
The sand sculpture will remain in place until February 2 for Candlemas Day or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which in Mexico, is celebrated with a feast of tamales.
