Lifeguards resuscitate drowned tourist off central Playa del Carmen beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Lifeguards in Playa del Carmen were successful in reviving a tourist pulled from the sea unconscious. The Spanish man was rescued by beach lifeguards Monday after nearly drowning.

The incident happened Monday morning at a central Playa del Carmen beach off 10th Street when other swimmers alerted Civil Protection personnel about a drowning man. The city lifeguards rushed out into the sea and returned the man to the sand, however, he was unconsciousness.

According to a statement from Solidaridad Civil Protection, the man no longer had vital signs and was revived using CPR. He was transferred to hospital where he was reported to be in stable condition.

In a brief note, Solidaridad Civil Protection said “while carrying out surveillance work in the beach area at the height of 10th Street, the lifeguard team received an alert about a Spanish tourist who entered the sea and lost consciousness.

“After being taken out of the water, he no longer had vital signs, so they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, managing to revive him and then transfer him by ambulance to the hospital where his health condition is reported to be stable.

“Out of danger in the hospital, the tourist sent a letter of thanks to the Civil Protection staff for their quick intervention and professionalism.”
