Legal proceedings started after dog is videoed dragged behind PDC mototaxi

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A dog that was reported being dragged behind a mototaxi has been rescued. On Tuesday, a woman uploaded the video to social media of a chained dog being pulled behind the public transport unit.

City officials responded by locating the mototaxi and the dog. The dog was removed from its owner and the mototaxi seized. Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefania Mercado says legal proceedings against the owner have been initiated.

“The government of Playa del Carmen, under the leadership of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, reaffirms its commitment to animal welfare and building a more humane and just municipality,” the City of Playa del Carmen said in a statement.

“In immediate response to a public complaint posted on social media about a black dog being dragged behind a motorcycle taxi, the Playa del Carmen government, through the Ministry of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, in coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Citizen Security, rescued and secured the animal, which is now being held at the Animal Control, Assistance and Zoonosis Center.

“The dog is receiving veterinary care and the necessary treatment for her recovery. At the same time, the corresponding legal proceedings have been initiated to ensure that this act of cruelty does not go unpunished,” the City reported.

“The protection and respect for animal life are non-negotiable. In Playa del Carmen, we clearly state: zero tolerance for animal abuse. This government works every day to be a voice for those who don’t have one,” Mercado said.
