Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Firemen were requested in central Playa del Carmen Friday night due to a restaurant fire. Residents of the Centro neighborhood requested emergency assistance after smoke and flames were seen coming from inside an eatery.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on 14th Street and 30th Avenue, when witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames coming from inside Las Chulas. Emergency reports said minutes earlier, an explosion had been heard, likely caused by a gas leak.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before midnight to a smoking restaurant. A large portion of the building was damaged from the fire. A stationary gas tank leak is being investigated as the likely cause of the late night fire.
