Bacalar, Q.R. — Thick smoke was seen for kilometers during a recent dump fire outside Bacalar. Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández said the fire grew to cover around 10,000 square meters.
The fire is said to have started due to the dry hot temperatures. Martinez said that although flames were put out Friday afternoon, machinery was brought it to dig under the garbage since they suspected an underground fire.
She said that the fire no longer presents any risk of being out of control since the surface garbage has already burned, but “the heat and temperature of the fire is underground, so machinery will proceed to spread the waste and firefighters will begin to pour water on it,” she added.
Fire trucks were brought in from the capital city of Chetumal Thursday afternoon to deal with the open air dump blaze which was fought by both firemen and elements of the navy into Friday evening.
