Judge rules former Playa del Carmen mayor remain in prison

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Despite an appeal for house-arrest, a criminal judge of the municipality of Solidaridad ruled that Mauricio Góngora Escalante remain in preventative custody.

The hearing for the request was made by his defense lawyer, who requested the detention of his client be modified, however the presiding judge determined that were no circumstances or reasons for the change in detention, stating that the former mayor of Playa del Carmen will remain in prison as a precautionary measure.

Mauricio Góngora Escalante was taken into police custody January 25, 2018 in a mall in Mexico City for the crime of peculation for 750 million pesos while he worked under ex-governor Roberto Borge, who also remains in prison.
