Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — One of the two ferry companies along the Cancun-Isla Mujeres route has said farewell. On Thursday, Jetway announced the suspension of its services as of December 16, 2023.
In an announcement the company said “We want to inform the entire community that Jetway will suspend Puerto Juárez – Isla Mujeres – Puerto Juárez operations with its last day being December 15, 2023.
“We sincerely appreciate your support and preference during this time and we hope to provide you with our services again in the future. Jetway Ferry Family.”
The company began offering its services more than two years ago as a competitor to Ultramar. However, a decrease in passengers added financial strain to the company who began operating the route in July 2021.
According to company workers, Jetway reported a high figure of more than 61,400 passengers in December of 2021 to just over 18,000 in November of 2023, a figure that barely covered the cost of fuel.
Jetway is reported to have had a successful 2022, transporting nearly 490,000 people during that year. However, the numbers did not hold. Local speculation for the decline in figures is simply location.
While the Jetway boats were older than their competitor, their terminal was located further from the city of Cancun.
Jetway will offer ferry services as its last day on December 15, 2023. As of December 16, the company will cease operations.
