Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A large fire that quickly spread has destroyed a section of the Dolphin Discovery park in Isla Mujeres. The park, which is located on the island, caught fire early Sunday afternoon.
Firemen did what they could to save the burning palapas and other structures, however, their efforts were severely hindered by strong gusts of wind. Nearly 100 people were evacuated from buildings when the fire began.
Firemen spent more than two hours trying to control the fast spreading flames before it was finally deemed under control. At least four grass palapas, along with several smaller structures, were completely burned.
Karla García, director of the community hospital of Isla Mujeres said three people were treated for shock. The Secretary General of the Isla Mujeres City Council, Hugo Sánchez Montalvo was one of the officials on site. He confirmed no deaths.
The smoke generated by the Isla Mjueres Dolphin Discovery park was thick enough that it could be seen from Cancun.
According to preliminary information, a short circuit in the kitchen started a fire that quickly spread. The exact official cause of the fire and the extent of damage is not yet known.
