Investigation started into possible murder of two men found dead on Costa Maya beach

Costa Maya, Q.R. — Authorities in Costa Maya are investigating what is believed to be the murders of two local fishermen. The bodies of two adult males were found on a beach between the towns of Mahahual and Xcalak late Thursday night.

One body was found in a boat. The second was found laying in the sand. Recovery was difficult due to the remotness of the location.

An area resident stumbled upon the bodies of the two men who are reported to have been local fishermen. Their bodies were found at Playa Xahuayxol and showed signs of a possible violent death.

Both bodies appeared to have been tortured, according to local media reports. A local resident passing by reported the discovery to Xcalak authorities.

One of the men was inside a boat and had visible injuries to his head and torso. He was found with a blue nylon rope around his neck.

The other man was found naked laying the sand with injuries and bruises on his right leg and head.

National Guard arrived a few hours after the report to confirm the finding at which time the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was notified. Forensic personnel proceeded to remove the bodies.

Playa Xahuayxol lies halfway between Mahahual and Xcalak in the area known as Costa Maya.

Police were at the scene Friday investigating in the daylight. Authorities have not commented on what is believed to be a double murder. The two deceased men have not been named.
