Holbox, Q.R. — For the first time in the island’s history, the Office of Environmental Protection will operate in Holbox in order to ensure new developments comply with environmental regulations.
Miguel Ángel Nadal Novelo, head of la Procuraduría de Protección al Ambiente (PPA), says they will operate in Holbox to check that the new developments comply with environmental regulations as well as properly deal with their construction garbage.
He says that due to the distance, Holbox has not had environmental surveillance by the state, but now with the publication of the Yum Balam Reserve Management Plan, this has changed since it details urban and federal areas.
He explained that their main focus will be the fulfillment of the conditions for authorizations in environmental matters and that the waste of construction materials (debris) are disposed of correctly. He notes that they will also be checking that sewage waste pipes are done properly and with permission.
