Holbox fisherman suffers shark bite

Holbox, Q. R. — A fisherman suffered a shark bite while fishing near Cabo Catoche off the island of Holbox.

The incident happened Saturday when he and several co-fishermen were on the sea when one man was grabbed by the leg. His companions say that Edgar Hernández, who is originally from Tabasco, was working when the attack occurred.

They say they managed to help him back into the boat and transfer him to the mainland to receive urgent medical attention. The injured man was first stabilized in a hospital in Kantunilkin and later taken to Playa del Carmen for further treatment.

The fisherman suffered a substantial bite to his leg, however, he has been receiving specialized medial attention and is not likely to lose his leg. It is believed blood in the boat from caught fish attracted the shark.

Shark attacks are very rare in these parts of the Caribbean Sea.
