Group of Costa Maya residents block highway in protest

Costa Maya, Q.R. — A group of Costa Maya residents blocked a section of the Mahahual-Cafetal federal highway shortly after noon Tuesday. The group blocked the busy highway in hopes of government talks.

The residents, some of whom were from irregular settlements, were asking for the installation of basic services while others, such as the Ejidos, want their land takeovers stopped by squatters.

The mixed group of area residents used rocks, trees and a backhoe to block the highway. At times, small numbers of vehicles were permitted to pass through their highway blockade, however, the road block generated a long line of backedup traffic.

The Tuesday afternoon protesters wanted the immediate intervention of state government authorities, hoping for the arrival of State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez.
