Group of Bacalar children win third suspension against Sedena lagoon project

Bacalar, Q.R. — A group of children from the municipality of Bacalar have won a new Amparo against a lagoon building project. The group of 23 kids filed the lawsuit earlier this month and won.

The group of youths were helped with their legal battle by the Federal Public Defender’s Office. The kids filed a complaint May 6 to protect children’s human rights, including the right to a healthy environment, water, health, culture, information, and public participation in environmental matters, reported the Office.

As a result, the First District Court based in Chetumal granted the temporary suspension to halt construction on the rest home for the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) personnel.

Sedena began construction in April next to Bacalar Lagoon and San Felipe Fort. Several suspensions have been granted since the building was approved without the required environmental permits.

This latest is the third suspension granted against the construction of the Sedena rest home.
