Mexico City, Mexico — A second group of men and women have been sent to Canada by the Government of Mexico. The second group, who will join the already 104 sent, will provide combatant and technical assistance in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
According to Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, specialized personnel from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor) will participate in international incident management training to strengthen forest fire coordination between Mexico and Canada.
The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), sent a second contingent of personnel specialized in forest fire management to support the Government of Canada.
The group were sent Monday within the framework of the cooperation instruments established with the Canadian Interagency Wildland Fire Centre (CIFFC) and the Operational Plan signed for 2026.
This second contingent consists of 103 people: 100 firefighters and three technicians, organized into five Type 1 brigades, two Agency Representatives, and one Senior Agency Representative.
They will be deployed to the province of British Columbia, where they will join the wildfire management operations coordinated by Canadian authorities.
As part of this mission, specialized personnel from Conafor will participate in real-time international training in incident management, which also includes fire management specialists from various agencies.
This exercise will strengthen forest fire coordination capabilities, adopt working mechanisms used in Canada, and, based on the accumulated experience, improve the response to large-scale fires both in Mexico and in Canada.
This group will join the contingent made up of 104 people (100 firefighters and four technical staff) that left July 28 for Thunder Bay to join the forest fire management operations coordinated by Canadian authorities.
The mobilization is in response to requests for international support from Canada due to the high demand for resources to address the current wildfire season.
According to public reports released in July, Canada remains at National Preparedness Level 4, which implies a high level of operational activity and limited availability of specialized personnel.
This action reaffirms the Mexican government’s commitment to international cooperation in addressing environmental emergencies and to the exchange of technical capabilities for fire management between the two nations.
Collaboration between Mexico and Canada in this area has a recent history of deploying specialized personnel and an operational framework in place through 2026.
