Costa Maya, Q.R. — A group of frustrated Xcalak residents blocked the federal highway Wednesday in protest to the lack of sargassum maintenance. The angry group accused Chetumal City Hall of not doing enough to control the amounts landing on their beaches.
In protest, the group blocked the Xcalak road junction that leads to Mahahual. They said the vast amounts of accumulating seaweed generates a foul odor that drives tourists away, which has a direct effect on the local economy.
The group requested a comprehensive sargassum management program from authorities, saying that both state and municipal authorities have not done enough to provide support to reduce the problem.
