Former Playa del Carmen mayor charged with abuse of authority in garbage company concession

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen former mayor Laura Beristain Navarrete, has been charged with abuse of authority. The charges were laid against her after a complaint was filed by the Redesol garbage collection company.

The company claimed that Beristain suspended their concession without obtaining authorization from the city council.

Beristain’s lawyer was present at the video conference where the official charges were announced. A trial will determine her criminally responsibility including any damages toward the company.

The suspension of the garbage company in Playa del Carmen was passed on to the current administration to deal with. Current mayor, Lili Campos, was summoned to reinstate the concession for which the city had to repeat the process of waiting for the company to take over the service.

When the company failed to do so, city council had to verify it and again, intervene in suspending their concession with the endorsement of the city council.

During the four months of pretrial time, Beristain has been ordered to sign in every 15 days and remain in the state.
