Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A former Playa del Carmen police officer has been found guilty of abuse of authority and infringing on freedom of expression of a local journalist.
On Saturday, the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) reported that Solidaridad officer Benedicto “S” was found guilty through the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Attention to Crimes committed against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE).
The FGR detailed that “the defendant, when he was working as a Municipal Preventive Police Officer of the Secretariat of Public Security and Municipal Transit of Solidaridad, violently detained a journalist for recording an event of public interest and issuing critical comments to the local authority.
“The defendant, after arresting the journalist and transferring him to the offices of said Secretariat, decided not to make him available to the competent authority, thus violating due process.”
For crimes against freedom of expression and abuse of authority for assaulting a journalist in Playa del Carmen, he has “accepted his responsibility for the facts, issued a public apology and promised to repair the damage caused to the victim.”
