Firemen spend night battling oil recycling fire in Merida

Merida, Yucatan — A massive ball of fire sent Merida firemen to an oil recycling plant south of the city Tuesday. For more than six hours, firemen battled the incredible flames generated by the burning oil.

The fire happened in Plan de Ayala Sur which included the burning of four warehouses. According to a news brief, the fire started Tuesday night. It was at 11:13 p.m. when citizen reports of the blaze were made to emergency services.

The city sent 80 firemen and 30 units to the site. Firemen were on scene all night trying to extinguish the 40 by 50 meter blaze. The fire was deemed under control by 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire began in one of the recycling warehouses and quickly spread to the other three. There were no injuries reported. Authorities are still working on the cause.
