Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad firemen rushed to the scene of a warehouse fire Friday in the Pedregal area of the city. Workers inside the warehouse called emergency services shortly before noon after seeing smoke.
Several area residents also reported the fire to emergency services after seeing the thick plumes of smoke rising from the building. PDC firemen arrived along with police at the Avenida Andrés Quintana Roo location.
Alejandro Contreras Díaz, Municipal Director of Firefighters, reported that there were no worker injuries during the fire, but that one fireman was treated for smoke inhalation by responding paramedics.
He said that they are continuing to work on the exact cause of the blaze, which is believed due to human error. “We do not have the official cause yet, however, it is believed due to carelessness or human error,” he said.
“I don’t think the fire was intentional. Witnesses have told me that there were people working inside when suddenly, they saw a worker who ran out and then all the others ran out when there was a column of smoke,” he said.
The warehouse is used to store fiberglass. Firemen had the situation under control by 1:30 p.m.
