Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A grass rooftop fire left one family without a home on Christmas Day. The palapa fire was reported to the Solidaridad fire department late Christmas Eve.
Firefighters arrived at the home on Olivos Street in the irregular area of In House to a burning structure. While they were able to extinguish the home, they were not able to save it.
A group of children playing with firecrackers accidently lit the home’s grass palapa on fire. While lighting them, one shot upward and into the dry grass. Flames quickly spread to an adjacent home, however, firemen were able to save the second house from being devoured by the fire.
According to information issued by the holiday stand-in Director of the Solidaridad Fire Department, the fire was caused by fireworks. The home where the fire started was reduced to ash.
