Bacalar, Q.R. — A hotel in Bacalar has been closed after a vehicle from their property rolled into the lagoon. The incident happened over the weekend and was reported by lagoon boaters who saw the van in the water.

A van belonging to Cristalino Lagoon Hotel was seen partially sunk in the water. A lack of parking caution is being blamed for the incident. Bacalar City Council took immediate measures to investigate and sanction those responsible as well as to assess possible environmental damage.

According to the Bacalar City Hall statement, Civil Protection, Ecology and Inspection personnel went to the scene of the incident on Boulevard Costero Sur where they confirmed that the vehicle rolled into the lagoon.

After an inspection, authorities verified that the hotel did not have its documentation up to date so they proceeded to close it while the corresponding investigations for both the van and hotel permits are carried out.

The Bacalar City Council says they are investigating possible environmental contamination due to van leaks or fuel spillage in the lagoon. Fines will be applied accordingly. In the meantime, the hotel remains closed.
