Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An old dock at the end of Avenida Constituyentes is set for demolition for a rebuild. The company who owns it wants to build the second dock to be larger than the current one.
The Ultramar ferry company intends to demolish their current dock which is old and damaged and, according to city officials, was initially built illegally. Ultramar intends to demolish the old dock in order to build a larger one with a greater capacity.
Lourdes Varguez Ocampo, the Secretary of Solidaridad Sustainable Environment and Climate Change said the company has currently regularized this controversial project by having all the permits processed before the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
She pointed out that the current dock is heavily damaged and would not be able to support the docking of larger vessels or the flow of more passengers. She said Ultramar is managing the final details and that city officials are now only waiting for the start notice for construction.
