Faulty wiring said cause of fire that destroyed school

Bacalar, Q.R. — A school in the community of Margarita Maza de Juárez of Bacalar was destroyed in a fire. The small Mayan school suffered extensive damage after bad wiring left the building in ruins.

The fire happened earlier this week at the Carlos Lugo López Telesecundaria in the municipality of Bacalar. School Director Luis Alcocer Balam says the Ministry of Public Education is aware of the fire that destroyed the secondary school, including all teaching material and furniture.

Balam says they are waiting on local authorities to provide support so students can return to class. That support will come from the Secretary of Education of Quintana Roo.

The entire building was gutted by the fire.

An investigation into the fire determined faulty wiring to have been the cause.
