Environmental inspectors visit PDC mangrove after public allegations of nighttime filling

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Environmental authorities from Playa del Carmen visited a mangrove reported being filled in on social media. Numbers residents from the Xcalacoco area in the city’s north complained about the heavy machinery arriving at night to fill it in.

Following those social media complaints, personnel from the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change carried out an inspection Friday.

The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente Sustentable y Cambio Climático y Zofemat, Samantha Álvarez, reported fill material used to raise the ground level by 4.5 meters was observed with no trace left of the mangrove.

She said next week, the company in charge of the project must submit their permits to the Ministry of the Environment for the project being carried out at that location.
