Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A bicyclist was killed Friday night in west Playa del Carmen after being hit by a semi. The double long fuel tanker was turning right at an intersection when the driver ran over the bicyclist.
Paramedics were called to the scene at 125th and Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue where they pronounced the male bicyclist dead. The accident was reported just before 8:30 p.m.
According to witnesses, the victim was riding an electric bicycle when he was struck by the double-long semi while making a right turn. The driver kept going but stopped when people began screaming at him that he had hit the bicycle.
Foresnic personnel were brought in to remove the young man’s body from between two wheels of the fuel tanker. He is reported to have been in his mid-20s.
Municipal Traffic personnel took the driver of the semi in for questioning from the scene. Some witness reports said the driver of the bicycle was trying to outrun the semi through the intersection. It is not known if the electric bicycle driver played a part in the fatal accident.
