Eight killed in semi-bus crash that was heading to Cancun

Escárcega, Campeche — Eight people were killed in a highway accident early Sunday on a passenger bus heading to Cancun. The passengers were killed when a bus and semi collided head on during the darkened hours of Sunday.

Emergency services from the surrounding municipalities of Escárcega, Carmen and Candelaria attended the 1:00 a.m. accident scene where they located the destroyed bus and semi.

The crash involved a passenger bus from the Transportes Hernández company and a transport semi. The bus had left Cárdenas, Tabasco hours earlier and was headed to the city of Cancun at the time of the crash.

The accident happened near the junction to Candelaria when the driver’s sides of both units collided. The driver’s side of the bus was split into two. Seven bodies were initially found among the twisted metal of the bus by around 5:00 a.m. An eighth body was located at 2:00 p.m. during the ongoing wreckage search.

It is not known if one of those bodies was the semi driver. Survivors were transferred to hospitals in Escárcega, Candelaria and Mamantel, Carmen. An official number of injured was not yet known.

According to motorists who witnessed the accident, the driver of the semi invaded the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into the passenger bus.
