Eight car crunch paralyzes Playa del Carmen traffic

Dozens of cars were stopped at the city’s busy Playa del Carmen Boulevard intersection near Centro Maya when the cargo truck arrived. Unable to stop, the driver slammed into a vehicle that caused a chain reaction.

According to initial reports, the vehicle was traveling southbound in the left lane when he came upon the set of traffic lights. The accident happened shortly after 9:00 a.m. that triggered a chain of collisions. A total of eight vehicles were damaged.

Traffic was affected for several hours while municipal authorities worked to remove the damaged cars. Traffic was hampered even more with the arrival of tow trucks and emergency services.

Transit officers were at the scene diverting traffic to alternate routes around the accident site. It was around noon when traffic began to normalize.
