Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An inmate search at the Playa del Carmen Centro de Retención (Cereso) lead to the discovery of drugs and weapons. During the Tuesday search, personnel from the Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and National Guard conducted searches on groups of inmates as well as different areas of the prison.
An undisclosed number of prohibited objects that included narcotics and homemade weapons were found inside the prison and on prisoners. Unannounced searches have become more routine during this past year.
Some of the searches have lead to prisoners being transferred out of the Centro de Retención Municipal de Playa del Carmen (Cereso) and into more secure facilities in other parts of the country.
Since the searches began with the new administration last year, more than 160 high risk inmates have been moved. The Cereso of Playa del Carmen has nearly 500 prisoners inside its walls.
