Costa Maya, Q.R. — The driver of a vehicle was arrested at the Quintana Roo-Belize border for being in possession of 650,000 peso. Members of the National Guard made the arrest Monday after elements of the National Customs Agency of Mexico found the cash.
The driver, who was not identified, was unable to prove where it came from or their legal possession of the money. The driver was detained during an inspection in the customs section of the “Subteniente López” International Bridge when trying to enter Quintana Roo from Belize.
The car was searched after the driver entered through the “nothing to declare” lane. While in the lane, the driver received a red light via the automated selection mechanism, making him subject to a customs inspection.
The cash was found in bundles under the driver’s seat and under the mat covered with a black bag.
