Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The driver of a van sustained severe injuries Friday after crashing his vehicle into a highway billboard sign. The afternoon accident completely destroyed the front end of his van, trapping him inside the cab.
Four firemen from Playa del Carmen worked for more than 20 minutes to remove him from behind the wheel. The driver was eventually freed from the cab and taken to hospital with extensive leg injuries, among others.
Preliminary reports say the man fell asleep at the wheel when he veered off the highway and into the large sign. The accident happened near an overpass just a few kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.
