Driver partially ejected killed in single vehicle rollover outside Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — At least one person was killed Saturday night in a single vehicle rollover outside Playa del Carmen. Several official vehicles were at the scene of the 9:00 p.m. highway crash a few kilometers north of the city near the Punta Maroma.

The driver of a black Volkswagen Jetta traveling south lost control when entering the marked detour in the area where construction work is being done at the Punta Maroma sinkhole.

Upon approaching the construction zone, the driver lost control and crashed into a light pole. The car was left on its roof along the side of the highway. The male driver was partially ejected from the vehicle and found laying under his car.

Police, National Guard and an ambulance attended the scene where two people were reported injured. However, after evaluating the injured, paramedics confirmed the male driver had died.

Traffic was backed up for kilometers in the already heavily congested area due to the extensive highway construction.
