Driver leaves bus and passengers after Costa Maya highway accident

Costa Maya, Q.R. — More than 40 national tourists were left sitting on the side of a Costa Maya highway after the driver drove the bus off the road.

The passengers were reported to authorities by numerous motorists who saw them on the highway about 40 kilometers from Chetumal. The 8:00 a.m. accident happened when, for reasons not known, the driver of the bus lost control. His bus became stuck in thick highway vegetation.

According to witnesses, the driver of the bus left the scene, leaving his passengers to fend for themselves. The company passenger bus was traveling from Tabasco and was headed for Playa del Carmen when the accident was reported.

Transit Police and elements of the National Guard arrived to help the stranded passengers and deal with the abandoned bus, which was eventually towed to federal facilities.
