Dozing driver overturns north of Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The driver of a private vehicle was taken to hospital Sunday after overturning outside Playa del Carmen. The driver of the vehicle is reported to have fallen asleep at the wheel while driving north along the federal highway.

Emergency services were at the 6:00 a.m. scene after motorist reports of the single vehicle accident. The driver of the car was taking the corner at Punta Maroma when he dozed and swerved off the road into a pile of rocks.

The impact left the car on its side. The driver was treated for injuries on the side of the highway before being transferred to a Playa del Carmen hospital.

National Guard Highways were first on scene. Upon questioning the driver about what happened, he claimed he had fallen asleep. Traffic was slowed while authorities waited for a tow truck to arrive and remove the damaged vehicle.
