Disorientated trio from Cancun rescued by navy from choppy Isla Mujeres waters

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Three men were rescued from rough waters Saturday off Isla Mujeres after becoming disorientated. Elements of the Navy made the rescue Saturday afternoon after the Ninth Naval Region received a distress call.

The men were located in Isla Mujeres waters on their private boat Dandy approximately 15 miles east of Puerto Cancun. The trio left Cancun earlier that day, but due to the ongoing bad weather, were unable to return to land. Dandy’s three crew were found unharmed.

On Saturday, ports of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres were two that closed navigation to small vessels. On Friday afternoon, the Port of Cozumel announced a closure to vessels under 33 feet, while in Cozumel, vessels under 40 feet were prohibited.

The port closures were announced after the arrival of a mass of artic air from the U.S. Cold Front No. 19 began to enter the Yucatan Peninsula Friday. It is forecast to stick around for the holiday weekend generating a significant drop in temperatures as well heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts.
